Guarding Against Deception

1 John 2:18-27

God and His Gospel will keep us safe from deceivers and their deceptions.

1. John unmasks the false teachers (18-19)
2. John exposes their false teaching (20-23)
  • The Antichrists are those who were against Jesus and betrayed Christ.
  • John unmasked the false teachers and false teaching.
  • Deceivers are not going to deceive you because you've been anointed by the Holy One Himself.
  • You have been anointed, immersed and filled with the Spirit by Jesus.
  • Jesus is the only mediator between God and man.
3. John points seasoned saints back to the gospel (24-25)
  • How do you prevent deception? How do we do our part? Don't lose your grasp on the gospel.
  • "If the message you heard remains in you, you will remain in the Son and the Father."
  • And this is the promise He promised us: eternal life.
  • Blessed Assurance is ours because we've passed from death to life.
4. John points seasoned saints to Jesus (26-27)
  • Are you worried about deceivers and their deception?
  • Are you scared of being deceived?
  • Are you concerned about your children being deceived?
  • Are you more aware of the wiles of the devil than God?
  • God and the gospel will keep us safe from the deceivers and their deceptions.
  • We must remind ourselves of the gospel and the God of the gospel and Chris in us continually.
  • God the Holy Spirit and His gospel is the ultimate protection against deception.
Potential Application Questions
1. How does it bring us assurance to know that the Holy One has anointed us (anointed = set us apart and made us holy for His purposes)?

2. What thoughts do we find ourselves holding onto that are contrary to The Truth we've been given in God's Word?

3. What do we need to do to replace these deceived thoughts with the knowledge of the truth?

4. What does it look like to personally guard against deception by grasping the gospel? (How can you help your kids do this?)

5. How can we confess the Son and display the gospel practically in our lives?

6. What should the knowledge of the gospel abiding in us look like?
