Success and Sacrifice

Colossians 4.7-8

The Messengers and Their Mission (7-9)

Greetings from Friends (10-14)

To be a “slave of Christ” means that all one’s possessions, aspirations, and time belong completely to Him. Christ owns him, and therefore Epaphras does not offer service to Him only as his time or inclinations permit. - David Garland

Greetings and Final Instructions from Paul (15-17)

A Handwritten Note (18)

“Grace” is, of course, a rich and foundational theological concept, one that Paul can use to express the essence of the Christian faith (1:6; Romans 5.2). Paul has begun his letter by asking for “grace” to be upon the Colossians (1:2), and it is fitting that he concludes with a similar wish. Their need to continue and grow in their faith in the face of false teaching will be undergirded and stimulated by the continuing work of God’s grace in their midst. - Douglas Moo

Some Things to Consider

Serious success. Sacrificial service. Can you spot God's faithful love and sovereign power in your life and in the lives of others?

Ever feel like your life resembles the voyage of Magellan and, while grateful for the good things, you might like less sacrifice or even a re-do? How does God, the Gospel, and thoughts of Heaven encourage you during those times?

"Paul is never stingy with praise or gratitude." Are you? Why or why not? How does gratitude or praise (encouragement) affect you when you receive it? When you express it to others?

Has God ever redeemed an "epic failure" in your life? What did that look like? How did it bring hope and help to you?
