But What About Me?

Genesis 26.2, 4-5

1. God expects his Word to be obeyed.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Christian principle of biblical authority means, on the one hand, that God purposes to direct the belief and behavior of his people through the revealed truth set forth in Holy Scripture; on the other hand it means that all our ideas about God should be measured, tested, and where necessary corrected and enlarged, by reference to biblical teaching. Authority as such is the right, claim, fitness, and by extension power, to control. As our sovereign, God has the authority to impose obligations on us, to command our obedience, and to bind our conscience. He also has the power and right to punish disobedience. – J. I. Packer

Matthew 28.18-20
Hebrews 1.1-3
Colossians 1.15-20

What does obedience and discipleship have to do with evangelism?
What does obedience and discipleship have to do with grace?
How do we combine these concepts without becoming legalists?

2. We relate to God under the New Covenant.

Jeremiah 31.31-34
1 Corinthians 11.25
Hebrews 8.13
Hebrews 9.15
Galatians 3.13-14
2 Corinthians 3.3, 6-18
Galatians 4.21-26
Galatians 3.19
Galatians 3.21-25

The Mosaic covenant was meant to lead us to Christ as the end and goal of the Mosaic law (Rom 10:4). Paul’s opponents were often guilty of failing to see that the law covenant had come to an end, and thus they were trying to make it do something it was never designed to do: provide inheritance, righteousness, life, or salvation (Gal 2:21; 3:18,21). – Jason C. Meyer

What are the differences between the covenants?
What are the similarities?
Why was there a need for a "new" covenant?

3. How then shall we live?

While the Law remains a vibrant demonstration of God's character and wisdom, Paul did not simply add Jesus' commands to the Law of Moses.

The coming of Christ requires that the whole system be recalibrated around Christ as the center of the Christian faith… The believer found new life in Christ and so now comes to Christ to find out how to live out his new life. – Jason C. Meyer

Galatians 6.2
John 13:34
Ephesians 5.25
Philippians 2:12–13
Romans 8.3-4

What is the difference between the "Law of Moses" and the "law of Christ"?
Why do we not add the commands of Christ to the Law of Moses?
How does regeneration cause us to fulfill the demands of the Law without being under the Law?
Do we ever add to the Gospel with our own personal "laws"? Why?
